Run-Time
Modules
HoIs
Run Time Module provides the facility to master selections from
an image database onto CD-ROM. One organisation to take advantage
of this is Central Library in Manchester who, following the award
of a grant from the Wolfson British History Programme in November
2000, started a project with the objective of broadening the scope
of their photographic collection and building on its appeal
to young people. For the project 3000 images were chosen from the
collection, in close consultation with the LEA, and transferred
to CDROM. The CDs were distributed to Manchester schools for
use in Local History project work.
The
CD features 3000 images from the digitised Local Studies Collection
chosen with reference to the National Curriculum topics in primary
and secondary schools. The images show buildings including schools,
streets in the city centre and in the suburbs, and people, famous
and not so famous.
Topics
include:
- Life
in Britain during World War Two showing evacuation of children,
air-raid precautions and bomb damage
- Britain
since 1948 showing housing, costume and leisure pursuits.
- Victorian
Manchester showing working class and middle class costume and
housing, women workers and suffragists
- The
Industrial Revolution including the building of the Manchester
Ship Canal, the Cotton industry and social conditions
